LITRE METER HELPS SMART TRAK IMPROVE WOUND CARE

100-SERIES-FAMILY-PHOTOr.jpgLitre Meter has supplied Smart Trak Model 100 digital mass flowmeters to a leading wound care solutions provider.

The instruments are used in a test application to introduce a controlled air leak into a wound model at very low pressures at airflow rates of between one standard cubic centimetre per minute (sccm) and 50 sccm. The Smart Trak regulates the air flow in the system. A pump pulls air from a chamber where the pressure can be anywhere between zero millimetres of mercury (mmHg) and -300 mmHg. Operational temperatures are between 15°C and 25°C.

Each meter helps to control the inlet of air at normal atmospheric pressure (760 mmHg). The pressure of the air being introduced to the wound model is nominally -80 mmHg but the meters needed to be calibrated for pressures to -225 mmHg.

Smart Trak 100 meters were selected because they provide accurate digital measurement at the required pressure range and flow rates. The Smart Trak 100 has an accuracy of +/- 1.0 per cent of full scale. The standard version can measure flow ranges from 0-10 sccm to 0-1,000 standard litre per minute (slpm).

Smart-Trak 100 features Dial-A-GasŪ technology with an internal microprocessor pre-programmed with ten gases that are commonly used in biotech, pharmaceutical, analytical and research applications ? other gases can be substituted to customise the flowmeters. This technology allows the instrument to be used for multiple applications at a lower cost, creating greater flexibility as well as helping to reduce its spares inventory

Constructed in 316 stainless steel, the instrument features primary standard calibration and NIST traceability. It also has a pilot module, available mounted to the face of the instrument or in a convenient hand-held version, which replaces expensive control and readout electronics. It enables a range of control functions including gas type, setpoint value and source, engineering units, output signal and valve state ? open, closed or automatic.

These control functions are also available from a PC via RS-232. Source code for RS-232 communication is provided but it has multi-drop RS-485/MODBUS RTU capability using a Compod?.

The Compod enables simple gas processes like gas mixing and blending, batch control, leak testing and process monitoring at a fraction of the cost of complex programmed logic controllers (PLCs). A Compod, coupled with Smart-TrakŪ mass flow meters and controllers, simplifies basic flow control installations and permits networking of multiple instruments using open source MODBUS RTU protocol. Two digital outputs and one analogue input can be configured by the end user for a wide variety of process controls. Unlike dedicated PLCs, a Compod is a small device that mounts locally to the face of the Smart-Trak MFC.

Smart-Trak and Compod are manufactured by Sierra Instruments. Litre Meter, a leading manufacturer and supplier of custom flowmeters, is the UK distributor for the Sierra Instruments range of flowmeters. As with Litre Meter?s own range of custom flowmeters, Sierra Instruments? range is designed to operate in some of the harshest conditions on the planet.
