Chemical Injection Flowmeters

The proven and established VFF Series Rotary Piston Meters have been very successfully adapted for chemical injection measurement both top-sides and subsea. Their inherent reliability meets the low maintenance requirements for either installation. The flow measurement system remains unchanged and a signal processing PCB has been introduced, mounted in a pressure-proof housing which has a sub-sea mateable connector. Pulses from the reed-switch sensor are converted to a 4-20mA linear flowrate signal provided on a 2-wire output circuit. The low power consumption of the electronics allows the system to be externally loop-powered. Topsides an Exi or Exd solution is utilised.

Chemical injection typically consists of applications that are multi-fluid with a wide range of flow rates, meaning measurement devices must deliver high turndown capability with uncompromising measurement performance in varying real-world conditions. Litre Meter's VFF meters provide the chemical injection measurement requirements on many platforms throughout the world today ranging from the Gulf of Mexico to Vietnam, Angola and Brazil. Accurately controlling the amounts of chemicals, such as corrosion inhibitors, that are added to crude oil is essential to minimising production costs. If too much is used they need to be removed when the oil is refined - and this can cost nearly 10 per cent of the price of a barrel of oil. These chemicals are also expensive. Typically thirty per cent of the running costs of an oil rig are associated with the chemicals used to pre-treat crude oil before it is pumped shore side. The VFF flowmeters measure the flow of the inhibitor chemical to an accuracy of 0.5 per cent, making it possible to control its use to a very high tolerance. Subsea versions

In subsea versions uniquely, for security, two long life sensors are installed. The electronics automatically searches for a working one to use after a flow stoppage, loop disconnection or sensor problem. The meter output is monitored directly by an ROV or via submarine cabling to a remote location. Using this vital information of actual flowrate the chemical injection flow control valves can be set correctly. In a permanent installation continuous on-line chemical injection monitoring is achieved.
